Gaw | Poe LLP believes in using our skills and resources to represent the interests of the public and defend the rights of all citizens. We have billed hundreds of hours of pro bono throughout our career and have assisted notable programs such as The Ninth Circuit Pro Bono Project, The San Francisco AIDS Foundation, The Mississippi Center for Justice and Legal Advocates for Children & Youth.

Representative pro bono engagements include:

  • Won Ninth Circuit appeal on behalf of California prison inmate deprived of exercise in retaliation for his principled refusal to engage in compulsory speech. Successfully negotiated settlement payment by prison officials to client after case was remanded back to district court.
  • Represented Mississippi homeowners defrauded of Hurricane Katrina insurance proceeds by contractors who failed to perform agreed-upon repairs to homes after collecting payment. Obtained default judgments against defendants and initiated collection efforts.
  • Represented California prison inmate on Ninth Circuit appeal of claim that prison policy forbidding possession of hardcover books violated the First Amendment.
  • Assisted low-income clients in obtaining legal guardianship over minors to prevent their placement in foster care homes.
